Although the rules in both high stakes and small stakes poker tournaments are roughly the same, usually it is recommendable to use a different strategy for each of these two categories of competitions. The main reason why you should approach small-scale poker tournaments in a different manner lies in the fact that during such contests you will mostly encounter a less proficient opposition, which may be easier to dominate.
However, don’t make the mistake of underestimating your opponents, as in some situations you may also be faced with skilful, experienced players posing as rookies. Therefore, prior to applying a particular strategy at the poker table, make sure you do a correct assessment of your adversaries, and never let your preconceptions or your ego dictate the way you play poker. Doing so might cost you, so never take your opposition lightly.
1. Take small risks in the beginning
When competing in a lower-level poker tournament, it all comes down to surviving until you are presented with the opportunity to get the upper hand in the game, raise the pots, and claim victory. In the first few games of the tournament when the blinds are significantly smaller than your initial stack, taking risks would be pointless. At this point, it would be a lot more advantageous to focus your strategy on protecting your stack rather than raising it right away.
That said, especially in the initial stages of poker tournaments, limit yourself to playing premium hands, or combinations that allow you to enter the pots very cheaply. When you are unsure about a particular hand, it may be better to sit off that round and come in strong later with a solid set of cards.
2. Keep in mind that KJ off-suited is not the ultimate combination in no-limit Texas Holdem poker games
Although this may seem as a rather general pointer, there is in fact a broader meaning behind it. Think about it for a moment: With all varieties of poker hands that can hit top pair, two pairs or trips (and rarely any superior combinations), there is too much of a risk of having the second best hand at the table, which could prove very costly in the end. The best examples of such hands in poker games are KJ, QT and J9, although the list with hazardous combinations doesn’t stop here. At the opposite end, the safer hands that you should try to make the most of are AK and AQ.
3. Look for hesitant adversaries who are too scared to match your play.
Towards the end of poker tournaments when the pots get big and the tension increases, winning is all a matter of who has the strongest nerves, as people generally tend to favour a much too tight approach to the game that makes it hard to get a decisive hand. Under such circumstances, don’t hesitate to harass and try snatching pots from opponents playing in an overly protective manner. However, make sure you weigh your chances carefully before attempting that.
For instance, when attempting to snatch your opponents’ blinds right before the flop, it may be sufficient to raise the big blind by only 2.75 times in order to seize the overall pot at the table. Avoid the pitfall of doing superfluous all ins and raises, as even the most timid of players may call you down at some point if luck is on his/her side and he/she has an unbeatable hand.
